Ans. ” Break of day in the Trenches ” is a poem, composed by Issac Rosenberg, the great war – poet during the Modern age in the English language and literature. This poem is an illustration of the futility of war and the folly of the persons who are engaged in the first world war.

The poet finds nothingness in the existence of war and he considers it worthless. During the period of fierce attack, the soldier defends himself in the trenches and perilously passes his time. There lies horror, frustration, dejection, melancholy, and chaos in and around the war – field.

The poet was himself a soldier and was hidden inside the trenches. It was a terrible night and he was passing his time in extreme agony. The darkness was crumbling away and the break of day came which gave a bit of ray of hope to the poet.

When the poet was sitting inside the trenches a small rat came there inside the trenches. This small creature was fearless and had no care of war. In the eyes of the poet, the rat has cosmopolitan sympathy in its eyes.

It did not know any sort of discrimination whereas human beings are selfish and conservative. The rat would behave in the same manner as a German and there would be no maliciousness in its heart. The thoughts and feelings of this little creature were superb and praise-worthy.

Even in the gloomy area of the battlefield, the rat was dauntless and it mocked the human beings. Human beings are well developed but they are whimsical and selfish. The torn – fields of France were sprawled in and around and only shrieking voice and flame have existed.

The poet had completely lost his faith in the utility of war he wanted the extinction of atrocities in no time. The roots of pappies are infused in the veins of the common mass. They are eager to commit any mischief for their nefarious gains.

The poet bade farewell to the rat which was going towards the camp of German soldiers. War is itself meaningless because it perishes the existence of human beings. Man has got transitory life and he will have to mingle with dust.

This poem is loaded with higher thoughts and ideas. The words applied are sensitive, impressive, touchy, and up-to-mark. The way of evocation is in direct narration. The mark of punctuation is used in abundance.

There lie no systematic rhythms. The poet has presented his thoughts, ideology, and understanding in an explicit, vivid, and consummate manner.
