The first volume contained the essays which are as follows-
(i) Of studies
(ii) Of discoveries
(iii) Of ceremonies and respects
(iv) Of followers and friends
(v) Of suitors
(vi) Of Europe
(vii) Of regiment of health
(viii) Of honor and reputation
(ix) Of faction
(x) Of negotiation.
The number of essays was increased to 38 in 1612 and later on, in the third edition, there were fifty-eight essay s in number.

The essays of Bacon are divided into two segments-
- Earlier essays
- Later essays In the early years
The sentences are short. crisp and sententious and are remarkable for the extra-ordinary condensation of thoughts. But in his later essays, we get frequent use of metaphors and similes, Bacon presented himself as a great observer of human affairs with superb illustrations.
Bacon’s fame in England and even abroad rests very largely on his essays. In these essays, Bacon presents himself as a moralist, statesman, and a great man of the world. The essays are the fullest and finest expression of ‘practical wisdom.
