This day was associated with masques, light comedies and a number of diversions of various kinds. As a popular festival, the sixth of January ranked next in importance to Christmas. During the Elizabeth, the celebration of Twelfth Night was marked by great ostentation and ceremony. Evidently this play was written by Shakespear with the same object. We may reasonably suppose that this comedy was played at the Court of Queen Elizabeth on the 6th of January, 1602.
The alternative title ‘What you will’, like the title ‘As you like it’, leaves a choice to the audience. The idea is, ‘Let everyone choose what best suits him in the play.
